Parker O-Rings
Parker Viton® O-Ring Materials
We supply Viton® O-Rings from Parker Seals and many other world-class manufacturers so please ask which offers the best value for your situation. Viton® O-Ring and seal performance cost benefit makes it the second most popular sealing material. Fluoroelastomer (Viton®, FKM) offers a wide range of resistance to chemicals, oil and heat, with situational service life above 200°C. The outstanding heat stability and excellent resistances are due to the high ratio of fluorine to hydrogen, the strength of the carbon-fluorine bond, and the absence of unsaturation. FKM compounds are widely used in chemical, automotive, aerospace and industrial applications.

Parker Nitrile O-Ring Materials
We supply Nitrile Buna-N O-Rings from Parker Seals and many other world-class manufacturers so please ask which offers the best value for your situation. Nitrile, also commonly referred to as Buna-N or NBR, is a copolymer of Acrylonitrile and Butadiene. Nitrile is the most commonly used elastomeric material for molded and extruded products. This material offers relative low cost, good mechanical properties, and resistance to many common oils, fuels and lubricants. NBR has poor resistance to weathering, sunlight and ozone so it is best used in enclosed environments where parts are not exposed to the elements. Hydrogenated versions of NBR (HNBR) have enhanced mechanical properties as well as greater thermal and chemical stability. Specific physical properties and chemical resistances vary by compound formulation.
NBR can be compounded for enhanced oil and fuel resistance, increased temperature flexibility, high hardness and extrusion resistance, low compression set, and a variety of other attributes. The physical properties of the compound largely depend on the Acrylonitrile content of the formulation. For example, high Acrylonitrile content causes increased oil and fuel resistance while adversely affecting low temperature flexibility and compression set resistance. It is important to consider the offsetting attributes when selecting an NBR formulation. Please contact a Marco Rubber engineer for assistance finding the best compound for your application.

Parker EPDM O-Ring Materials
We supply EPDM O-Rings from Parker Seals and many other world-class manufacturers so please ask which offers the best value for your situation. Ethylene-Propylene based elastomers make up a family of synthetic rubbers characterized by excellent chemical and thermal resistance. These materials can be compounded in a variety of ways for use in a wide range of demanding applications. Ethylene-Propylene elastomers are most commonly available as EPR, a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, and EPDM, a terpolymer. EPR and EPDM have very similar properties and the abbreviations are often used interchangeably. EPDM can be cured with either Sulphur or Peroxide. Sulphur curing is less expensive and easier to process but the product may be tacky and can exhibit some bloom. Peroxide curing is more difficult to process but provides better chemical, thermal, and aging resistance.

Parker FDA, USDA, NSF 51, USP Approved Compounds
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has established a list of rubber compounding ingredients which tests have indicated are neither toxic nor carcinogenic. Rubber compounds produced entirely from those ingredients and which also pass the FDA extraction tests are said to "meet the FDA requirements". The FDA does not approve rubber compounds. It is the responsibility of the manufacturer to compound food grade materials from the FDA list of ingredients and establish whether they pass the necessary extraction requirements. Similar standards are established by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Additional requirements have been imposed upon seal manufacturers regarding food and beverage service. Parker has developed several materials that are certified to NSF 51, Food and Beverage Standard. In critical medical applications, seals often must be made from an even "cleaner" list of ingredients. The U.S. Pharmacopoeia (USP) Class VI outlines requirements for system toxicity and intracutaneous toxicity for these "cleaner" compounds. The USP Class VI compounds must be made from ingredients with clear histories of biocompatibility that meet tighter requirements for leachates. Typical applications for our FDA, NSF 51, USDA materials are disposable medical devices, surgical instruments and medical fluid dispensing components, as well as a wide variety of food and beverage handling equipment. The type of approval/certification required generally rests with the end customer's regulatory expectations for the specific application.

Certified to NORSOK M-710, API 6A, ISO 23936-2 & Total
Certified to NORSOK M-710, API 6A, ISO 23936-2 & Total
Rapid Gas Decompression also known as Explosive Decompression failure in O-Rings is identifiable by surface blisters, pits or pocks. It is caused by absorption of gas at high pressure and the subsequent rapid decrease in pressure. The absorbed gas blisters and ruptures the elastomer surface as the pressure is rapidly removed. These NORSOK compliant O-Ring materials are designed to outperform standard materials significantly extending sealing life in some applications.

The information on this page is to the best of our knowledge accurate and reliable. However, Marco Rubber makes no warranty, expressed or implied, that parts manufactured from this material will perform satisfactorily in the customer's application. It's the customer's responsibility to evaluate parts prior to use.
The temperature ranges presented on this page are approximations for dry air service only and should not be used to determine design specifications or end-use temperature limits. Actual temperature range of a compound in an end-use application is highly dependent on part type, hardware configuration, applied forces, chemical media, pressure and thermal cycling effects, and other factors. The most practical way of determining an end-use temperature range is testing in the actual application conditions. Consult a Marco Engineer for more details.
