Trifluoromethane (also known as R-23, Freon 23, Forane 23, Genetron 23, Suva 23, or Chlorodifluoromethane) is a colorless, nonflammable, and nonirritating gas with a slight ether-like odor. It is primarily used as a refrigerant and aerosol propellant in a variety of industries.
Common types of failures when rubber is exposed to trifluoromethane include cracking, hardening, and swelling due to the chemical’s tendency to dissolve certain components of the rubber. Additionally, prolonged exposure to the gas can cause rubber to become brittle and break down prematurely, resulting in leaks and other system failures.
Viton ® o-rings from Marco Rubber offer excellent compatibility with a range of chemicals, oils and resist high temperatures up to 400F. Viton ® is also known as FKM made of fluoroelastomer one of the most versatile and widely used sealing materials.
