Trifluoroethane (also known as HFC-134a, R-134a, Freon 134a, Forane 134a, Genetron 134a, Suva 134a, or 1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane) is a colorless, nonflammable, and nonirritating gas with a slight ether-like odor. It is primarily used as a refrigerant, propellant, and aerosol solvent in a variety of industries.
Common types of failures when rubber is exposed to trifluoroethane include cracking, hardening, and swelling due to the chemical’s tendency to dissolve certain components of the rubber. Additionally, prolonged exposure to the gas can cause rubber to become brittle and break down prematurely, resulting in leaks and other system failures.
