Trichloroacetic acid, also known as trichloroethanoic acid, is a colorless, odorless liquid with a sharp, acidic taste. It is used as an industrial reagent in the production of dyes, drugs, and other organic compounds, as a laboratory reagent, and as a chemical intermediate. Exposure to trichloroacetic acid can cause rubber to swell, become brittle, and suffer from accelerated aging and cracking. This is due to the chemical attacking the rubber, leading to partial or complete breakdown of the material.
