Tetrachloroethane, also known as perchloroethylene or PERC, is a non-flammable, colorless liquid with a sweet odor. Common uses of tetrachloroethane include dry cleaning, metal degreasing, and as a solvent in the production of vinyl chloride for PVC plastic.
When rubber is exposed to tetrachloroethane, it can cause a range of failure modes. Physical damage can occur due to embrittlement, resulting in cracking and deformation of the rubber. Chemical degradation can occur due to oxidation, causing a breakdown of the rubber's material properties. Finally, accelerated aging can occur when the rubber is exposed to UV radiation, resulting in a loss of elasticity, reduced tensile strength, and increased brittleness.
