Sulfur hexafluoride is also known as sulfur fluoride, sulfur tetrafluoride, octofluoride and sulfonitride. It is used in a variety of applications including in electrical equipment, in magnesium smelting and as a tracer gas.
When rubber is exposed to sulfur hexafluoride, the rubber can become brittle and may suffer from accelerated aging. In some cases, the rubber can even become hard and may crack. Additionally, the rubber can become discolored and may not be able to maintain its flexibility.
