Sulfite liquors, also known as sulfite pulping liquors, are aqueous solutions of sodium sulfite, sodium bisulfite, and sodium metabisulfite. They are used in the production of paper and pulp, in textile bleaching, and as a preservative in food and beverages.
When rubber is exposed to sulfite liquors, it can become brittle and break apart, leading to seal failure. Additionally, the sulfite liquors can corrode the metal components found in rubber seals, leading to further failures. Furthermore, sulfite liquors can cause rubber to swell and soften, leading to decreased flexibility and seal integrity. Additionally, sulfite liquors can cause the rubber to discolor or fade over time.
