Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol that is typically found in sugar-free products such as candies and chewing gum. It is also used in the production of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, as well as in food products like cereals and soft drinks. Common uses for sorbitol include sweetening, thickening, and preserving.
When rubber is exposed to sorbitol, it can cause a number of types of failures. It can cause hardening of the rubber, leading to cracking and brittleness. It can also cause swelling, leading to a loss of strength in the rubber and eventual failure. In some cases, the rubber may become brittle and brittle, leading to a complete breakdown of the rubber. In extreme cases, the rubber may become so brittle that it becomes impossible to repair or replace.
