Sodium diphenyl sulfonate, also known as sodium p-toluenesulfonate, is a white, crystalline solid commonly used as a surfactant and wetting agent in a variety of industries ranging from detergents and paints to food processing and mining. Common types of failure when rubber is exposed to sodium diphenyl sulfonate include swelling, increased permeability, and cracking. The chemical can cause the rubber material to become brittle and may also cause discoloration and a decrease in strength. Additionally, sodium diphenyl sulfonate can cause corrosion of rubber, leading to further degradation of the material.
