Potassium nitrate is also known as saltpeter, nitrate of potash, and nitre. It is commonly used in fertilizers, explosives, fireworks, matches, and food preservatives. It is an odorless, white or yellowish-white crystalline solid.
When rubber is exposed to potassium nitrate, it can cause swelling and brittleness of the rubber, leading to cracking and eventual failure. Additionally, the chemical can cause oxidation of the rubber, leading to a decrease in strength and flexibility and ultimately degradation of the material.
Fluorosilicone o-rings are a hybrid of silicone and FKM resulting in great jet fuel resistance with high and low temperature performance.
