Pinene is a monoterpene, an organic compound typically derived from the essential oils of coniferous trees. It is commonly used in the pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries for its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal properties.
When rubber is exposed to pinene, it can cause the rubber to become brittle and crack, leading to eventual failure. Additionally, pinene can cause the rubber to become hard and inflexible, making it difficult to process and form into the desired shape. In extreme cases, pinene can cause the rubber to swell and become porous, which can lead to leaks or complete failure.
