Perfluoropropane, also known as R-218, is a hydrofluorocarbon gas. It is a colorless and odorless gas used as a refrigerant and blowing agent in the rubber and plastics industries. It is also used in aerosol propellants, fire extinguishing agents, and as a fumigant.
When rubber is exposed to perfluoropropane, the rubber can experience physical, chemical, or thermal degradation. Physical degradation can include cracking, crumbling, or shrinking, while chemical degradation can cause discoloration, brittleness, and reduced tensile strength. Thermal degradation can cause rubber to become soft, sticky, or brittle. In addition, perfluoropropane can cause rubber to swell or shrink depending on the concentration.
