Paraldehyde, also known as paraformaldehyde and methylene oxide, is a chemical compound commonly used as a disinfectant, preservative, and fixative in various industries. Common applications include the preservation of biological specimens, the chemical synthesis of other compounds, and the medical treatment of skin conditions. Common types of failures when rubber is exposed to paraldehyde include cracking, stiffening, and discoloration due to oxidation. The rubber may become brittle due to the oxidation of the chemical, which can lead to premature failure. In some cases, the rubber may become tacky, which can lead to seal failure.
