Paint thinner, also known as Duco, is a solvent used for thinning paint, varnish, and other coatings. It is also used in the manufacture of lacquers, enamels, and other products. Paint thinner is composed of a variety of hydrocarbons, such as mineral spirits, solvents, and aliphatic hydrocarbons.
Due to its solvent properties, paint thinner can cause rubber materials to swell and degrade. This can lead to cracking and decreased flexibility, ultimately leading to failure. Exposure to paint thinner can also cause discoloration of the rubber and leaching of plasticizers, resulting in a decrease of the rubber's overall performance.
