Nitrotoluene, also known as ortho-nitrotoluene or o-nitrotoluene, is an aromatic organic compound with the chemical formula C7H7NO2. It is primarily used as a starting material in the manufacture of dyes, explosives, and propellants.
Exposure to nitrotoluene can cause rubber to become brittle and crack, leading to eventual failure. Long-term exposure can also cause the rubber to swell, becoming softer and more prone to further damage from expansion and contraction. In addition, nitrotoluene is soluble in oil, which can cause even further softening and swelling of the rubber. This can lead to significant weakening of the rubber, making it more susceptible to damage.
