Nitric acid, also known as aqua fortis and spirit of niter, is a highly corrosive mineral acid and is commonly used in the production of fertilizers, explosives, and rocket fuel. It is also used in the treatment of metal surfaces and as an oxidizer in organic synthesis. Common types of failure when rubber is exposed to nitric acid include oxidation and corrosion of the rubber, swelling and hardening, and cracking or tearing of the material. Additionally, nitric acid can cause the rubber to become brittle, reducing its overall strength and durability.
