Nitric Acid, also known as aqua fortis and spirit of niter, is a highly corrosive and oxidizing mineral acid. It is often used in industrial processes such as metalworking, for producing fertilizers, explosives, and dyes, and for pharmaceutical applications.
When rubber is exposed to nitric acid, the chemical reacts with the material causing swelling, hardening, and cracking. As the acid is highly corrosive, this can lead to the rubber seal losing its elasticity and eventually failing. Additionaly, certain rubber types such as natural rubber are more prone to degradation from nitric acid than others, and so should be avoided when using this chemical.
