Natural gas is also known as methane, marsh gas, and liquefied petroleum gas. It is a hydrocarbon gas composed mainly of methane and is used as a fuel source in many industrial and residential applications. Common uses of natural gas include heating, cooking, and generating electricity.
When rubber is exposed to natural gas, the rubber can become brittle and harden over time. This can lead to cracking and other types of failure. Exposure to high concentrations of gas can also cause swelling, softening and discoloration, leading to premature failure. At very high temperatures, natural gas can cause cracking and thermal breakdown of rubber, leading to brittle failure.
