Monochloracetic acid, also known as ethyl ester, is a chlorinated organic acid commonly used in a variety of industries. It is used as a plasticizer, an antiseptic, a preservative, a surfactant, a corrosion inhibitor, an emulsifier and a wetting agent. It is used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, rubber, and paints, and is also used as a soil conditioner and fertilizer.
Common failures of rubber when exposed to monochloracetic acid include tearing, swelling, cracking, and discoloration. The rubber may also become brittle and break down over time due to the acidic nature of the chemical. Other forms of deterioration can include a decrease in tensile strength and elongation. In extreme cases, rubber exposed to monochloracetic acid may even dissolve or disintegrate.
