When rubber materials are exposed to malic acid, the chemical can cause a number of failures. The acid can cause the rubber to swell, which can lead to a decrease in tensile strength and an increase in permeability. It can also cause embrittlement of the rubber, making it more prone to cracking and breaking. Additionally, it can lead to corrosion of the rubber, resulting in discoloration, cracking, and other physical signs of deterioration.
