Methyl T-Butyl Ether, also known as MTBE, is a synthetic organic compound that is primarily used as a fuel additive to reduce air pollution. It is also used as a solvent in the production of pharmaceuticals, perfumes, and dyes.
When exposed to rubber, MTBE can cause the material to become brittle, leading to cracking and product failure. Additionally, it can cause the rubber to swell, leading to a loss of physical properties. Over time, this can render the rubber unusable for its intended purpose. MTBE can also cause a loss of color, odor, and taste, which can be a major issue in certain applications.
