Methyl acetate, also known as methyl ethanoate, is a colorless liquid with a characteristic odor. It is used in a variety of industries, including paint, coatings, inks, adhesives, and cosmetics. It is also used as a solvent for some chemical processes and as a flavoring agent for foods and beverages.
When exposed to methyl acetate, rubber materials can suffer from swelling, hardening, and cracking. These failures are caused by the chemical's ability to break down the rubber's molecular structure. The rubber can also become brittle and eventually break apart. In some cases, the rubber may become sticky and form a gummy residue on contact.
