Methyl 2-pyrrolidone, also known as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), is a commonly used solvent in the pharmaceutical, agricultural, and textile industries. It is used in a wide range of applications including as a cleaner, degreaser, and as a component in many coatings, adhesives, and cleaners.
Rubber materials are generally not recommended for use with methyl 2-pyrrolidone due to its ability to dissolve rubber materials. The most common type of failure associated with exposure to methyl 2-pyrrolidone is the swelling of rubber seals, leading to a decrease in their sealing capabilities and potential leakage of the material they are supposed to contain. Additionally, long-term exposure to methyl 2-pyrrolidone can cause rubber materials to become brittle, leading to cracking or tearing.
