Mesityl oxide, also known as methacrolein, is a colorless and flammable liquid with a strong odor. It is widely used as a solvent in a variety of industries, such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and perfumes.
When rubber is exposed to mesityl oxide, it can cause swelling and loss of elasticity, resulting in significant weakening of the material. Additionally, it can cause cracking, hardening and embrittlement of rubber, reducing its effectiveness and leading to premature failure.
