Mercury salts, also known as mercuric salts, are chemical compounds containing mercury in its +2 oxidation state. Common uses for mercury salts include dental amalgams, pharmaceuticals, and laboratory reagents.
When rubber is exposed to mercury salts, it can cause the rubber to become brittle and subject to cracking. Additionally, mercury salts can corrode metal parts, leading to further failure of the rubber seal. Long-term exposure to mercury salts can also cause the rubber to become porous and brittle, leading to fatigue cracking. Mercury salts can also cause chemical burns to rubber due to its highly corrosive nature.
