Mercaptobenzothiazole, also known as MBT, is an organic compound commonly used as an accelerator in the production of rubber. It is also used as a corrosion inhibitor in metal processing and as a biocide in water treatment.
When rubber is exposed to mercaptobenzothiazole, it can cause the rubber to swell and become brittle. The swelling of the rubber can cause the rubber to become more prone to cracking and tearing. Additionally, the rubber can become sticky and discolored. In extreme cases, the rubber can become completely rigid and unable to move at all.
