Malathion, also known as mercaptothion, is an organophosphate insecticide commonly used to control mosquitoes, aphids, and other pests. It is also used in agriculture to control crop-damaging insects, as well as to treat lice and scabies. Malathion is used in public health programs to reduce the incidence of vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and yellow fever.
Common types of failures when rubber is exposed to malathion include swelling, discoloration, and embrittlement. Malathion can cause rubber to swell, which can lead to cracking, softening, and other deformations. Additionally, malathion can cause the rubber to discolor, as well as become brittle, leading to a decrease in its elasticity and strength. Malathion can also cause rubber to become more susceptible to other environmental factors, such as ozone and ultraviolet radiation.
