Isooctane is also known as 2,2,4-trimethylpentane or iso-octane. It is an organic compound that is widely used as a fuel component and as a solvent for waxes, oils and resins. Isooctane is also used as a solvent in the production of pharmaceuticals and in the manufacture of adhesives, paints and coatings.
When exposed to isooctane, rubber can become brittle and crack due to the solvent's ability to dissolve rubber components. This can lead to a decrease in the rubber's flexibility and mechanical properties such as tensile strength and tear strength. In addition, prolonged contact with isooctane can cause oxidative degradation of the rubber, resulting in brittleness, cracking and discoloration.
Viton ® o-rings from Marco Rubber offer excellent compatibility with a range of chemicals, oils and resist high temperatures up to 400F. Viton ® is also known as FKM made of fluoroelastomer one of the most versatile and widely used sealing materials.
