Iodine and tincture of iodine are both common names for iodine pentafluoride. It is an industrial chemical used primarily in the production of fluorinated products such as fluoropolymers, fluorinated pharmaceuticals, and fluorinated gases. It can also be used in the production of specialty glass and ceramics.
When rubber is exposed to iodine pentafluoride, common types of failures can occur. It can cause rubber to swell, become brittle, discolor, or crack. It can also lead to issues with rubber seals such as premature wear and tear, leakage, and loss of elasticity. In some cases, it can even cause the rubber to dissolve completely.
Viton ® o-rings from Marco Rubber offer excellent compatibility with a range of chemicals, oils and resist high temperatures up to 400F. Viton ® is also known as FKM made of fluoroelastomer one of the most versatile and widely used sealing materials.
