Glycolic Acid, also known as Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA), is used in a variety of industries such as cosmetics, food and beverage, and pharmaceuticals. It is used a preservative, a flavoring agent, and as a chelating agent.
When rubber is exposed to Glycolic Acid it can cause swelling, softening, and cracking. It can also lead to embrittlement and discoloration. Additionally, it can cause a breakdown of the rubber due to the reaction with water, known as hydrolysis. This can lead to a decrease in the rubber’s physical and mechanical properties, resulting in a shorter lifespan.
