Fuel oil is a heavy petroleum product used primarily as a fuel in industrial, commercial, and residential heating systems. Commonly referred to as furnace oil, fuel oil is one of the most widely used petroleum products in the world. Common uses for fuel oil include heating buildings, powering ships, and generating electricity.
Common types of failures when rubber is exposed to fuel oil include swelling, discoloration, hardening, and deterioration. Prolonged exposure to fuel oil can cause the rubber to swell, leading to eventual breakdown and loss of shape. Fuel oil can also cause the rubber to become brittle and harden, leading to eventual cracking and eventual failure. Additionally, fuel oil may cause the rubber to discolor, leading to discoloration of the material. Lastly, fuel oil may cause the rubber to deteriorate, leading to eventual breakdown and loss of material strength.
