FORMALDEHYDE Resistant O-Rings and Seals
Formaldehyde, also known as methanal, is a colorless, flammable gas with a pungent odor. It is a common ingredient in many household products, including glues and adhesives, detergents, and preservatives, and is also used in the production of plastics, rubber, and fibers.
Common types of failures when rubber is exposed to formaldehyde include discoloration, softening, and cracking. Prolonged exposure to formaldehyde can cause the rubber to become brittle and may cause it to swell, leading to eventual breakdown and degradation. Formaldehyde may also cause the rubber to become sticky, leading to adhesion and sticking to other surfaces. Additionally, formaldehyde can cause the rubber to become hard and brittle, leading to brittleness and cracking upon mechanical stress.
