FC 12 (Dichlorodifluoromethane) is also known as R-12, Freon-12, and CFC-12. It is a colorless gas that is used a refrigerant, aerosol propellant, foam blowing agent, and fire extinguisher. It is commonly used in air conditioning systems, refrigerators, and freezers.
When rubber is exposed to FC 12, it can cause cracking and hardening of the rubber due to the chemical's low temperature properties. Oils can also cause problems with FC 12 as the chemical can break down the rubber-oil bond, resulting in rubber components becoming brittle and cracking. In addition, FC 12 can cause swelling of the rubber components, resulting in a decrease in strength and flexibility.
Viton ® o-rings from Marco Rubber offer excellent compatibility with a range of chemicals, oils and resist high temperatures up to 400F. Viton ® is also known as FKM made of fluoroelastomer one of the most versatile and widely used sealing materials.
