Exhaust gases containing nitrous gases, also known as nitrous oxide, are commonly used in various industries as a propellant and oxidizer and as a fuel additive. Nitrous oxide is a colorless, sweet-tasting gas with a slightly pungent odor. Common uses of nitrous oxide include its use in motorsports, medicine, and food production.
When rubber is exposed to nitrous oxide, the rubber can become brittle and cracked, leading to potential failure. In addition, nitrous oxide can react with the rubber, causing it to break down into smaller components, leading to further degradation and potential failure. As nitrous oxide is a powerful oxidizer, it can also cause premature aging of rubber, making it more vulnerable to failure.
