Ethyl t-butyl ether (ETBE) is a colorless, volatile organic compound commonly used as a fuel additive and intermediate in the synthesis of other chemicals. It is also used as a solvent in paints, coatings, and other products. Common uses include gasoline, paint thinners, aerosols, and automotive cleaners.
When rubber is exposed to ethyl t-butyl ether, it can cause swelling, discoloration, or cracking of the rubber. This can lead to a decreased lifespan of the rubber material and ultimately failure of the product. Additionally, ethyl t-butyl ether can cause the rubber to become brittle and prone to cracking or breaking. This can reduce the effectiveness of the rubber in its intended application and lead to a loss of performance and potential safety risks.
