Dibutyl phthalate (also known as DBP) is a commonly used plasticizer in the plastics, paint, and rubber industries. It is commonly used to make products more flexible, to enhance their durability, and to make them less brittle. It is also used in personal care products such as nail polish and hairsprays, as well as food packaging.
When rubber is exposed to dibutyl phthalate, it can cause swelling, softening, and cracking. The rubber can also become brittle and lose its strength and elasticity, leading to brittle fractures. Exposure to dibutyl phthalate can also cause the rubber to discolor and become brittle, resulting in premature failure.
