Chloroacetic acid, also known as monochloroacetic acid or chloride acetate, is a colorless liquid with a sharp, pungent odor. It is widely used as a starting material for the manufacture of a variety of products, including pharmaceuticals, herbicides, dyes, and surfactants. When rubber is exposed to chloroacetic acid, it can cause the rubber to become brittle, swell, and degrade. This can lead to seal failures or weakened seals. Additionally, chloroacetic acid can cause the rubber to discolor or stain if it is not properly protected.
