Chloracetic acid, also known as trichloroacetic acid (TCA), is a common industrial chemical used in processes such as papermaking, water treatment, and paint manufacture. It is a strong oxidizing acid and is used as a bleaching agent, a disinfectant, and an herbicide.
Rubber materials are vulnerable to damage from chloracetic acid due to its strong oxidizing properties. The acid can lead to a breakdown of the bonds that hold rubber molecules together, resulting in cracking, swelling, and hardening of the rubber. In addition, chloracetic acid can cause the rubber to become brittle, making it more prone to cracking and breaking.
