Cellosolve is also known as ethylene glycol monobutyl ether (EGBE), ethylene glycol butyl ether (EGBEA) and butyl cellosolve. It is a colorless, non-volatile liquid that is used as a solvent and as a raw material in the production of plastics and other chemicals. Common industries that use Cellosolve include textiles, printing, paint, adhesives, and cleaners.
When rubber is exposed to Cellosolve, the chemical can cause swelling and softening of the rubber material. Other failures that can occur include discoloration, cracking, and deterioration of the rubber due to the material becoming brittle. In extreme cases, the rubber seal can become completely destroyed.
Aflas® o-rings provide excellent chemical, high temperature, and steam resistance. TFE/P rubber, Aflas® fluoropolymer materials provide dependable sealing performance in water, steam, bases, and caustic environments resulting in common use in the oil exploration and drilling industry.
