Calcium phosphate, also known as tricalcium phosphate, is a mineral commonly used as a dietary supplement, as well as a food additive and preservative. Common uses for calcium phosphate include the production of animal feed, food fortification, and the stabilization of food products.
When rubber is exposed to calcium phosphate, the primary failure mode is that of hardening. The calcium phosphate molecules tend to leach out of the rubber, causing it to become brittle and harden over time. This can lead to cracks and other forms of physical damage, as well as decreased elasticity and strength.
