Bromoform, also known as tribromomethane, is a colorless, nonflammable, and sweet-smelling liquid that is soluble in water and miscible with many organic solvents. It is mainly used as a reagent in organic synthesis, as a stabilizer for chlorine, and as a solvent for waxes and oils.
When rubber is exposed to bromoform, it can cause swelling and cracking due to its low vapor pressure. Bromoform can also cause the rubber to become brittle and break. Additionally, prolonged exposure can cause the rubber to become discolored and may even lead to its premature failure. Bromoform can also cause damage to the rubber due to its corrosive properties.
Viton ® o-rings from Marco Rubber offer excellent compatibility with a range of chemicals, oils and resist high temperatures up to 400F. Viton ® is also known as FKM made of fluoroelastomer one of the most versatile and widely used sealing materials.
