Bromochloromethane, also known as bromochloroform, is a halogenated hydrocarbon commonly used as a solvent and as a fire retardant. In industry it is used as a cleaning agent for metal and other surfaces, as a fumigant in agriculture, and as a disinfectant for swimming pools.
When rubber is exposed to bromochloromethane, it can cause hardening and cracking of the rubber due to the breakdown of its chemical bonds. The solvent can also lead to a sticky surface on the rubber, which can cause adhesion problems in the rubber parts. Additionally, over exposure to bromochloromethane can cause the rubber to swell and disintegrate completely.
