Black lye, also known as alkali liquor and caustic liquor, is a highly concentrated solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH). It is used in a variety of industries for purposes such as pulp and paper bleaching, wastewater treatment, and petroleum refining. Common rubber materials are not resistant to black lye, and when exposed, can cause a variety of failures. Swelling, cracking, and loss of strength, durability, and elasticity are all common types of failure when rubber is exposed to black lye.
