Sodium bisulfite, also known as sodium hydrogen sulfite, is a common chemical used in a variety of industries. Common uses include as a food additive, a preservative in cosmetics, and a bleaching agent in the textile industry. When rubber is exposed to sodium bisulfite, it can become brittle, leading to cracking and eventual failure. In addition, the rubber may suffer from discoloration, fading and a decrease in flexibility over time.
