Barium iodide is also known as barium iodate and barium iodate monohydrate. It is commonly used as a catalyst in some organic reactions, a reagent for the determination of halogens, and a reagent for the preparation of hydrazines.
When rubber is exposed to barium iodide, it can become brittle and weak. The rubber can also become discolored, and may become sticky and/or brittle. Exposure to barium iodide can also cause the rubber to swell, and may cause the rubber to become more susceptible to accelerated aging. Additionally, barium iodide can cause the rubber to become less flexible and more prone to cracking.
