Ascorbic acid is also commonly known as Vitamin C and it is widely used in the food industry as an antioxidant, preservative and flavoring agent. It is also used in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. In the rubber industry, ascorbic acid is used as an antioxidant to prevent rubber from degrading due to oxidation.
Common types of failures when rubber is exposed to ascorbic acid include oxidation, hardening, discoloration, cracking, and loss of tensile strength. Ascorbic acid can also cause rubber to become brittle, reducing its strength and making it more likely to fail under stress. In extreme cases, ascorbic acid can cause rubber to disintegrate completely.
Viton ® o-rings from Marco Rubber offer excellent compatibility with a range of chemicals, oils and resist high temperatures up to 400F. Viton ® is also known as FKM made of fluoroelastomer one of the most versatile and widely used sealing materials.
