Ammonium sulfite, also known as ammonium bisulfite or ammonium hydrogen sulfite, is a white crystalline powder commonly used as a food preservative, bleaching agent, and tanning agent. It is also used in the manufacture of photographic paper, printing inks, and other products. Common types of failure when rubber is exposed to ammonium sulfite include cracking, swelling, and discoloration. Additionally, this chemical can cause physical and chemical degradation of rubber and rubber-containing materials due to its corrosive nature.
