Ammonium nitrate is also known as nitram, nitric acid ammonium salt, and ammonium saltpetre. It is a white crystalline solid and is used as a fertilizer, an oxidant in explosives, and a cooling agent in various industrial processes such as metalworking and welding.
When rubber is exposed to ammonium nitrate, it can cause hardening, embrittlement, and cracking due to the corrosive nature of the chemical. The acidity of the chemical can also cause swelling and softening of the rubber, which can lead to a loss of strength and elasticity. Additionally, the presence of ammonium nitrate can lead to discoloration, staining, and fading of the rubber material.
