Alums are a type of salt composed of aluminium sulfate and other ions. They are commonly used in water treatment, as an additive to fire fighting foams, in leather tanning and for dyeing and printing textiles. When rubber is exposed to alums, the rubber can be weakened as a result of the acidic nature of the alum. In addition, the alum can cause the rubber to harden and crack, leading to premature failure.
