AlkylBenzene is also commonly referred to as Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Aromatic Solvents and Aromatic Compounds. It is widely used in the production of detergents, solvents, dyes, perfumes, lubricants, adhesives and plastics. It is also used as a fuel additive and as an intermediate in the production of rubber.
Rubber is susceptible to chemical attack from AlkylBenzene and can become soft or brittle due to the accumulation of hydrocarbons. AlkylBenzene can also cause cross-linking of the rubber molecules, causing the rubber to become hard and brittle. Additionally, AlkylBenzene can cause corrosion of metal components in contact with the rubber. Over time, the rubber's physical properties can decrease significantly, and if left unchecked, the rubber can become brittle and prone to cracking or splitting.
